On 21 February, 20 Form 2 students visited Comix Home Base in Wan Chai, which was arranged by Art Teachers and the Academic Department under the MOI programmes. Guided by an English tour guide, students not only had the chance to enhance their English, but also have more in-depth knowledge of the development of Hong Kong comics and the masterpieces of famous local comic artists like Alfonso Wong Chak, Lee Wai-chun, Tong Wong Yuk-long, Seung-gun Siu-bo, and others. When they visited the tenement houses on Mallory Street and Burrows Streets, they learnt more about Hong Kong’s history and the architectural characteristics of these pre-war historic buildings. All the students were fascinated by the tour and thought that it was a very meaningful, educational and rewarding experience.

On 21 February, we visited Comix Home Base. Various creative work, products and publications were displayed. If you are interested in the classics like Little Rogues, that was first published 40 years ago, you can buy an electronic or newly re-published version. You can also find many beautiful paintings on the wall. I like the historic buildings nearby, especially the red brick wall because it is not easy to find one in urban areas.

From the visit to Comix Home Base, I learnt more about the development of our local comics and animation. Stylistic art works can be found there and they really show typical Hong Kong’s culture. Although the visit was not long enough for me to explore this wonderful place, it was really a worthwhile experience and roused my interest in local the comic and animation industries in Hong Kong.

At Comix Home Base, I found many beautiful pictures and interesting comics. I was deeply impressed by the Comix Salon. There are a large collection of comics, artworks and publications. Besides, next to the Comix Home Base, there were some historic buildings with pitched Chinese tiled roofs painted green. They are widely known as the ‘Green Houses’.

After visiting Comix Home Base, I found that many Hong Kong artists like Wong Yuk Long are very creative. He created many popular comics and of them is Oriental Heroes. Although it was first published in 1970 under the title Little Rogues, I like the story and the character Wong Xiao Long. Another well-known cartoonist I like most is Alice Mak Ka-pik. She is one of the two creators of the cartoon characters McMug and McDull Furthermore, I was deeply impressed by the pre-war Grade 2 historic buildings nearly. They are painted green and locally known as the ‘Green Houses’. I can learn more about how people lived in those days.

During an hour-long visit to Comix Home Base, I was impressed by the cluster of 10 pre-war Grade 2 historic buildings nearby. They were built hundred-years ago and it was amazing to see them. Selected collections of famous local comics and animation artists can be found everywhere. At the end of the visit, I bought some souvenirs from the stores there. It was really an interesting experience.
